Originally, I had decided to make the green fairy character in the glass passed out just for kicks... but since it was my friend's birthday and all, I thought it would be better to make her the green fairy.

So I used photoshop to composit her face into the picture and I gave her a new hairdo, which is hand painted.
It's a pretty simple set-up of only 2 lights: one key and one fill. Oh and just a touch of bounce light from the environment. Sometimes you really do not need more than just that.
I also took the opportunity to practice painting hair. So the hair was all painted in photoshop over a simple 3D base that I built with NURBS in maya and sculpted quickly to catch the actual lighting in the scene.

This was my entry for this past month's gnomon challenge.
It was hard coming up with an idea for this. I doodled for a while and had this planet with roads all around and started from there. Then the idea of making it planet hollywood came to my head and seemed funny so I went with that, and immediately after I decided I'd have the classic image of riding the flying bike by the moon.

As for the actual execution, I did all the modeling in maya, and I used mostly simple shaders. Rendered with mental ray using a simple IBL dome with a ramp texture to provide the lighting, and a couple point lights here and there for bounce lights especially coming from the big red sign.

Finally took it to photoshop for color tweaking and also added manually the motion blur on some of the ships and also enhanced the highlights on the ships.

Film Noir - Lighting Challenge

My entry for this particular lighting challenge.
Framing this particular scene was I think even more challenging than the lighting itself, hehe.
The elements were scattered all over so for instance in order to frame the gas station from the right I had to leave out the trailer and the graveyard.

So i duplicated a few things here and there and threw them in the foreground, moved stuff around and played with it until I had something that made a more compelling scene.

As for the lighting, well...this was the first time that I tried to do film noir. I didn't want to go for the typical private-eye kind of film noir since I figured mostly everyone would, so I decided to do a kind of horror film noir.

I used only software render in Maya, and then worked the de-saturation and contrast in photoshop, and manually tweaked little highligts in the rain.

All crits and comments welcome.
Cheers.
